Help Make Up Your Mind by Knowing What Is Actually Involved In LASIK Eye Surgery.
Lasik Vision Means
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK is currently the type of laser vision correction procedure that is most commonly used and sought by people wishing to correct some vision problems. There are some vision problems that cannot be correctled by LASIK. For those who are deemed suitable it is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that suits low, moderate, and higher prescriptions.
Preparations
To do a Lasik vision correction, necessary preparations have to be made for the procedure. Your expectations before, during and after the surgery may depend to a large extent on your doctor. As part of your preparation for the Lasik vision correction, you are required to make an informed firm decision if you will go through with having the surgery.
A review is needed to be conducted by your eye doctor to know if you are a good candidate with an eye problem that is suitable for Lasik vision correction before you sign the waiver.
You will be advised before the Lasik vision correction that you are required to cease wearing contact lenses. You will be asked to switch to wearing glasses full-time prior undergoing the Lasik vision correction for at least 2 to 4 weeks before having the procedure.
This is because the use of a contact lens can change the shape of your cornea. Abandoning your contact lenses a good while before the procedure will help enable the cornea to assume its natural shape which is essential for the surgery. Not ceasing to use your contact lenses may possibly result in a poor Lasik vision correction outcome for you and your eyesight.
What could happen if preparation is not followed?
Other problems that might arise include inaccurate measurements to be made and a poor surgical plan based on this, leading to poor vision after surgery. These measurements that are taken determine how much corneal tissue needs to be removed during the surgery to correct your vision ailment.
Measurements can be repeated at least a week after your initial evaluation and before your Lasik vision surgery to make sure they have not changed, especially if you wear RGP or hard lenses.
The procedure
You will normally be required to attend the surgery with a support person or partner. You will be unable to drive after you undergo the surgery.
You are likely to be given a calmative when you arrive at a time prior to the surgery. You are then likely to receive anaesthetic drops to numb your eye so you will not feel the surgery. You will normally remain awake for the duration of the surgery, although you will be somewhat unaware of what is happening to your eye or eyes.
You will be made to lie down on a reclining chair throughout the Lasik vision correction surgery. A shield is then placed over the eye as part of the Lasik vision correction procedure to protect your eyes from foreign elements.
Your eye surgeon will then proceed with the surgery required to correct your vision. The procedure for the actual surgery is extremely quick and takes only a few minutes.
Some surgeries allow your support person or partner to view the procedure through a screen. This can be reassuring for you as the patient and the person supporting you who can see exactly what is being done.

Post operative considerations and plans
After the Lasik vision correction procedure, you will be given some time for recovery. Your eye may feel an initial discomfort, that some describe as a “gritty” feeling in the eye. Avoiding rubbing your eye is imperative as this could dislodge the corneal flap. You will be
You will be provided with a regime of drops and medication to assist in healing and providing some feelings of comfort during this phase. The symptoms of discomfort should improve after a few days. If you experience severe pain few days post surgery, you will be advised to contact your doctor immediately.
You usually must go and see your doctor within 24 to 48 hours after Lasik vision correction, for removal of the eye shield, testing of your vision and examination of your eyes. You may use drops to prevent infection and you may be advised to use artificial tears to lubricate the eye.
Contact lens should not be used for any reason in the operated eye even if your vision is hazy. It is imperative that your eye or both eyes that have received eye surgery be given time to heal completely.
You will be asked to return for a post operative eye check in the week or 2 after surgery, again to examine the eye and how it is healing. This eye check will also help determine the success of the vision correction. It is an opportunity for you to inform the eye doctor of any issues that have arisen, raise any concerns you have and to ask any questions.
Any further eye check requirements will be discussed with you and determined as required by your eye doctor and the surgery procedures. Post operative eye checks are usually covered within the total cost of the procedure and should not attract any extra costs for the visits.
